As concerns grow over the deaths of eight women in Ekurhuleni, police have confirmed that a killing in Pretoria West on Monday (September 14) is not linked to the cases. 

Pretoria Rekord reported that the 25-year-old woman’s body was found inside a flat in Christoffel Street. 

According to Brigadier Brenda Muridili, the spokesperson for the Gauteng police, when officers arrived at the scene, they found the woman lying naked on the floor. 

Muridili said the woman had visible bruises and preliminary information suggests that she may have been strangled and raped. 

She confirmed that the killing was not linked to the series of women’s deaths being investigated in Ekurhuleni. 

8th body and reward 

Last night, acting national police commissioner Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane confirmed that an eighth body was discovered in Olifantsfontein, just north of Thembisa. 

Police said they were pursuing a person of interest and offering a R400 000 reward for information that could lead to the apprehension of the person of interest.

2 victims identified 

Police have thus far identified two of the eight women. The first was runner Elizabeth ‘Tsontso’ Moselakgomo (38) whose body was found in Kempton Park on September 12. 

The second was Itumeleng Kekana, who was reported missing on July 17. Her body was found on Great North Road in Pomona, Kempton Park, on August 3. 

Kempton Express reported that Kekana’s family had searched hospitals, clinics, mortuaries and police stations following her disappearance. 

Her partner, Lekgotla Gumede, identified her after seeing emergency services near Great North Road. 

Gumede appealed to investigators to review CCTV footage from the area to help determine what happened to her. 

Kekana left behind a 14-year-old daughter who is now living with her grandparents. 

Memorial run held in Moselakgomo’s honour 

Yesterday (September 15), community members gathered outside the Protea Hotel by Marriott O.R. Tambo Airport for a community memorial run in her honour. 

The group ran and walked from the hotel to Moselakgomo’s home in Rhodesfield before continuing to where her body was found. 

The gathering became both a farewell to Moselakgomo and a public expression of grief, anger and concern about the safety of women in the community. 

Participants sang, danced, prayed, shared poems and messages, while candles were lit in silence in memory of Moselakgomo.

The family later went to the state mortuary, where they were able to positively identify her. “The past few days have been an emotional rollercoaster for the family,” said Dawn Gounden, spokesperson for the family. Moselakgom leaves behind her minor child, family and many friends. The family said it now hopes the circumstances surrounding her death will be thoroughly investigated and that justice will prevail. “They place their trust in the SAPS to conduct a comprehensive investigation and to ensure that those responsible, if criminality is established, are held accountable,” said Gounden. Police warn against unverified social-media claims 

The public is also being warned not to share unverified information about the deaths.  

This follows the circulation of a message on social media presented as an official SAPS alert, claiming that a suspect described as the ‘Kempton Park Serial Killer’ had relocated to Potchefstroom and that an extensive police operation has been launched in the city. 

Police said they had not found an official report or complaint confirming the specific claims contained in the circulating message.

The North West acting police commissioner, Major General Ryno Naidoo, said police understood the concern such a message could cause, particularly among residents and students.  

Don’t create panic 

“We appeal to the community not to spread unverified information or create unnecessary panic, because any genuine operational development or public safety warning will be communicated through official SAPS channels,” he added.  

Kempton Express reported that deputy national police commissioner Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili stressed that police have not confirmed that the cases are linked. 

“There are similarities that our investigators are examining, but we will not confirm a linkage until every investigative and forensic process has been completed,” Mosikili said.

• The identity of a suspect or suspects in the other cases. 

• That particular people named on social media are involved. 

• That photos, videos or lists circulating on social media relate to these investigations.
