The cars thieves target most in South Africa

Four major car brands top South Africa’s theft list, making anti-theft measures and vigilance essential for owners.

According to the latest data from global technology company Cartrack, Toyota, Volkswagen (VW), Nissan and Ford are topping South Africa’s most-stolen list.

Lowvelder reports these include popular models such as the Toyota Hilux, Corolla and Fortuner; the VW Polo range; Nissan NP200 and Navara; and Ford Rangers.

Criminals use signal jamming devices

Cartrack says criminals are increasingly using signal jamming devices to block vehicle tracking signals when stealing cars.

Tips to prevent car theft

Here are some ways to help prevent your car from being stolen, especially during the festive season:

  • Ensure your car is locked, even while driving
  • Use anti-theft devices such as a steering wheel lock, immobiliser or anti-jamming tag
  • Install a GPS tracking unit
  • Park in well-lit areas
  • Avoid leaving valuables inside the car, especially in plain sight
  • Strengthen your driveway security, for example by installing CCTV
