Despite their disappointing exit from the African Nations Championship (Chan) after being beaten 3-1 by Nigeria on Sunday, Bafana Bafana will still pocket R1.3 million for finishing third in their group.

The local organising commitee for Chan announced yesterday the prize money for the tournament would total about R34 million, with the overall winners of the competition pocketing about R8.1 million.

After being labelled a “bunch of losers” and “unbearable, useless individuals” by Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula, social media was abuzz with the news that the team would be receiving money.

Mbalula had initially said the team “will be rewarded handsomely” should they progress further, but the offer was retracted soon after the team’s exit.

The payment will be made into Safa’s account, but it seems unlikely the prize money will be dispersed evenly among the 23-man squad.
