Jewellery store burgled inside Menlyn shopping centre

The men held security officers captive before breaking into the jewellery store.

Five men broke into a Menlyn jewellery store and made off with stock worth thousands of rands on Thursday morning.

Police said the store at the Menlyn Park shopping centre in Pretoria was burgled at about 7am before the store was open for business, Rekord East reported.

Police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller said the men held security officers captive before breaking into the Brown’s jewellery store.

The men were believed to have fled with an undisclosed amount of jewellery.

Miller said the police forensic team was still on the scene investigating.

“We believe the men to be to be armed according to information from security guards.”

One of the store’s employees told Rekord that she only heard that it was an attempted burglary and the men had failed to break in.

She later asked Rekord to contact their head office for a statement.
