A lack of ammunition turns police officers into administrators
Some of expired firearms certificates are said to have not been renewed as well.

The alleged shortage of ammunition available to South African Police Service staff in Ekurhuleni has seen Springs police officers stuck in their stations certifying documents, Springs Advertiser reports.
It is alleged their guns have been confiscated as a result of this shortage.
One police officer working at the Springs police station, who commented on condition of anonymity, says they had to hand over their guns last week.
It is alleged they could not renew their expired firearm compliance certificates last week and many more staff are expected to lose their guns this week.

“We are forced to help around the office doing administrative tasks, but cannot attend to any serious crisis for our own safety. We are hoping the matter will be sorted soon because we are unable to carry out our responsibilities of protecting the people,” he says.
However, Springs police spokesperson Captain Johannes Ramphora says he is not aware of any officers at the Springs police station having had their guns confiscated.
