A man was shot and wounded in an alleged shootout with police on Wednesday afternoon.

ER 24 emergency services were called to the scene on the Garstfontein Road in Mooiplaas around 15:45pm, where the injured man was found, Rekord East reported.

“The man, believed to be in his 30s, was lying next to a cellphone tower surrounded by local authorities,” said Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesperson.

“Paramedics assessed the man and found that he had a gunshot wound to his back and was in a serious condition.”

Meiring said the man was stabilised on the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital under police guard.

Police spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato said more information would be released later.
