WATCH: The moment Senzo Mchunu’s supporters thought he was elected SG

Magashule received 2360 votes to Mchunu’s 2336 votes.

Former Kwazulu-Natal African National Congress chairperson Senzo Mchunu was on Monday defeated by ANC Free State chair Ace Magashule to be elected as the new secretary-general of the governing party.

While an electoral official announced the results for the ANC’s new secretary-general, there was much confusion among KZN delegates who supported Mchunu for the top post. His supporters inadvertently thought that their candidate had won the election, but Magashule was in fact the winner.

Mchunu’s supporters were delighted at his purported win and carried him towards the stage, which resulted in the former premier awkwardly walking to the stage to only realise that he had actually lost to the Free State strongman.
