WATCH: EC driver, pedestrian killed as car spins out of control in horror accident

A video doing the rounds shows a vehicle spinning out of control, hitting two pedestrians. Here's a round-up of accidents around the country.


Dramatic footage of an accident which took place in Kariega, shows how a driver loses control of his vehicle, smashing into a concrete pole before it somersaults through the air and hit two pedestrians.

The accident which, according to police spokesperson Priscilla Naidu, occurred at about 07:24 on Saturday morning in Caledon Street, Kariega (formerly Uitenhage), has claimed the lives of two people and leaving the third seriously injured.

Shock Kariega accident

The driver of the Toyota Yaris has been identified as the 36-year-old John Tessner from Kariega. According to reports, he died on impact while a 51-year-old pedestrian was also fatally injured.

Another pedestrian, aged 50, was rushed to hospital suffering from serious injuries.

According to Naidu, police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

Head-on collision claims two lives

Two people have also lost their lives while one sustained severe injuries after two vehicles travelling on the R72 road in Port Alfred towards East London collided head-on.

Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose said the crash occurred on Saturday afternoon at about 16:30.

He said a Polo Vivo with one female occupant driving from Port Alfred towards East London collided with a Toyota Corolla with two occupants – a male driver and a female passenger — heading towards Port Alfred from East London.

Both occupants of the Toyota Corolla died on the scene.

The female occupant occupant from the VW Polo Vivo sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Port Alfred Hospital for further medical treatment.

Binqose said a case of culpable homicide was opened for further investigation.

“It’s not yet clear if the two people who died in the accident are related or not,” said Binqose.

“But what is clear is that reckless and negligent driving often result in head-on collisions and it continues to be a source of grief for a lot of families who lose their loved ones on our roads,” he added.

Motorist run over and killed while changing tyre

Late Saturday night, a motorist run over and killed while changing a tyre on the R21 in the vicinity of the Irene Village Mall, in Centurion.

Emer-G-Med paramedics responded to the scene. The man was declared dead on arrival of the paramedics.

On Saturday night, Emer-G-Med paramedics also responded to the scene of a vehicle collision on the N14 in Centurion.

Reports from the scene are that a light motor vehicle had suffered a mechanical breakdown and came to a stop in the middle of the highway. A second motorist stopped to assist and unfortunately, a third vehicle later crashed into both.

One male suffered fatal injuries and was declared dead on arrival of paramedics while four others were treated and stabilized on scene before being taken to a nearby hospital for further care.

Four critically injured in head-on collision

On Saturday night, Emer-G-Med paramedics responded to the scene of a motor vehicle collision on Hans Schoeman Street, in Randburg.

On arrival, it was established that two light motor vehicles were involved in a head-on collision. Five people were found to be injured of which four were in a critical condition.

Advanced life support paramedics stabilised the injured before they were rushed to nearby hospitals for further medical care.
