Cape Town to get new number plates

From the time of the changeover to the new CAA licence mark, no more CA licence numbers will be issued.

The city of Cape Town’s department of transport and public works have announced that Cape Town number plates will be changing from CA to CAA, starting as early as this coming weekend.

According to the department’s website, from the time of the changeover to the new CAA licence mark, no more CA licence numbers will be issued.

Vehicle owners can have their current CA license plate number transferred to another vehicle they own, or to a vehicle that is transferred into their names.

The statement explains that as soon as CA number plate combinations run out, no new CA license numbers would be issued, and that CAA numbers will begin to be issued the very next business day.

The department explained that the change is “unavoidable for technical reasons”, and have asked for patience from motorists on the day the changeover takes place.

The first 9,999 CAA numbers will be reserved as special licence numbers. Ordinary applications will see the system automatically generating a CAA license plate combination from CA 10,0000 at no additional cost.

Applications for special licence numbers will be processed at the applicable rate for certain combinations of numbers and letters. Details of these fees can be found at the department of transport and public works’ website.
