Residents blocked the Diepkloof Interchange with rocks and burning tyres.


At least two people have reportedly died after volatile protests in Diepkloof, south of Johannesburg.

It is believed that two protesters were hit by a truck that was trying to escape residents who were looting it.

One of the protesters died on the scene, while the other was taken to hospital, according to SABC.

A second person reportedly lost their life when they were hit by a car during the protest earlier in the morning.

The situation remains tense.

Diepkloof protest

Traffic was disrupted in parts of Soweto due to the protest by some Diepkloof hostel residents.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) said the busy Diepkloof Interchange has been severely affected.

One truck was torched, while another was looted during the protest.
