Mafikizolo snag Channel O and MOBO nominations

Afropop duo Mafikizolo may have been on a five-year hiatus but their return to music has proven successful with their nominations in the Channel O Music Video Awards and the Music of Black Origin Awards.

Nhlanhla Nciza and Theo Kgosinkwe had their own solo projects before they released ‘Reunited’ earlier this year.

Mafikizolo was nominated in the best African act category for the Music of Black Origin Awards. The other South acts nominated included Liquideep and Spoek Mathambo.

The duo also received two Channel O 10th Music Video Awards nominations – for their hit ‘Khona’, in the categories, most gifted dance video and for most gifted video of the year.

Nciza said: “We’re definitely ecstatic. Coming back and getting the love from all over the continent that we’re getting right now feels amazing. This rarely happens.”

According to Times Live, Nciza said they found out about their nomination on Twitter – and didn’t believe it until the phone calls started coming in .

Asked about the secret of their repeated success, Nciza said: “Sometimes when you’re in a group and you go away for a bit you only come back because the public wants it, even when your heart is not in it.

“But we badly wanted to do it and you can hear that coming through when you listen to the album so, if there’s a secret, that might be it.”

The Music of Black Origin Awards take place on October 19 in Scotland, and the Channel O Music Video Awards on November 30 in Soweto.
