Trump shares conspiracy theory about New Zealand mosque attack being a ‘hoax’

This was just one of several conspiracy theories seemingly embraced by the US President on Sunday.

US President Donald Trump had a busy day of tweeting on Sunday, culminating in allegations that he was amplifying the voices of conspiracy theorists.

Political journalist Judd Legum took to Twitter to accuse the president of “elevating the most unhinged, deranged voices” in a tweet that has since gone viral.

Trump RTed several users, with Legum claiming that among them are a “Pizzagate conspiracy theorist”, a “Qanon conspiracy theorist”, and a “conspiracy theorist who believes the New Zealand massacre was a plot to limit gun rights”.

Pizzagate is conspiracy theory alleging that Hillary Clinton’s then campaign manager, John Podesta, used coded words in emails that related to his involvement in human trafficking and child sex rings. While debunked repeatedly, including by police, there are some who still appear to believe it. Trump RTed William Craddick, one of the main proponents and promoters of the theory.

QAnon is another conspiracy theory, popular among the American far right, about an alleged plot by the “deep state” against Trump and his supporters. Trump RTed Chuck Callesto, who bills himself as a social media and public relations expert but is also known for espousing such conspiracy theories.

Possibly most controversially, Trump RTed alt-right conspiracy theorist Jack Posobiec, who appears to have tweeted allegations that the New Zealand massacre was some kind of “hoax”.

In an ironic twist, Trump’s embracing conspiracy theories comes just a week after he took to Twitter to slam another conspiracy theory, this time involving his wife, First Lady Melania Trump.

The conspiracy theory alleges that Melania has been replaced by a body double.

“The Fake News photoshopped pictures of Melania, then propelled conspiracy theories that it’s actually not her by my side in Alabama and other places,” Trump tweeted. “They are only getting more deranged with time!”
