History beckons as Chiefs could win the league after 15 games

It has never happened before. But it could happen this season. Well, let me go back and correct myself first. It has happened before but just not in the Absa Premiership that a team win the title at half way point which in this case happens to be 15 points.

It has been happening a lot in the GladAfrica Champions though. A team who finish the first round atop the standings and with a two digit points gap in the country's second tier league has gone on to win the title and promotion to the top flight. It has been happening a lot in the GladAfrica Champions though. A team who finish the first round atop the standings and with a two digit points gap in the country’s second tier league has gone on to win the title and promotion to the top flight.

It happened with Baroka. It happened with Highlands Park and last season it happened with Stellenbosch.

Now Amakhosi look set to be the first team in the top flight to do it. Ernst Middendorp’s side have a good chance of making 40 points before the summer break and could open a 12  to 15 point gap by end of the first round.

If you look at teams behind them, SuperSport, Sundowns and Wits, they are not really showing any threat to Amakhosi’s ambitions. I know and it has been said so many times that the league cannot be won this early, but Chiefs have put it in their own hands. Right now it is up to the other teams to come and wrestle it away.

If Amakhosi can keep their momentum going, they are a sure bet for the title. It is up to them to lose it especially if they can have a healthy 12 or points gap by summer break.
