Update: Security guard injured in attempted robbery in West Rand

Reports from the scene indicate that no one was injured in the armed robbery.

A security guard, believed to be 33 years old, was injured during an attempted robbery at a shopping mall in Krugersdorp on the West Rand on Sunday afternoon, paramedics said.

When ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene shortly before 2pm, the security guard was standing next to a shop in the mall, ER24 spokeswoman Ineke van Huyssteen said.

“He was assessed by our paramedics. It is believed that he was hit over the head with an unknown object by a suspect. He was transported to a nearby hospital for further medical care.

“Some of the people in the mall were also treated for shock. Paramedics helped to calm them down and checked some of their vital signs. A pregnant woman was also assessed and transported to a nearby hospital for further medical care.”

The circumstances surrounding the incident were not yet known, but South African Police Service (SAPS) officers attended the scene and would investigate, Van Huyssteen said.

Just before 2pm on Sunday afternoon, the Browns Jewellers in Cradlestone Mall was hit by armed robbers who allegedly fired three shots, reports the Krugersdorp News.

Reports from the scene indicate that no one was injured in the armed robbery.

It is believed that four armed robbers, two men and two women, approached the store but it is not clear if they left the scene with any goods. BCI Protection Services on Facebook said the incident was an attempted armed robbery and urged people to avoid the scene.

This is the third time the store has targeted by robbers. The store was the target of two heists in 2014 and again in December 2016.

Police and paramedics attended the scene.
