Two officials busted for allegedly helping 16 inmates escape

The officials are believed to have aided the 16 men who escaped from ‘Sun City’ last week.

Police have confirmed two correctional services officials were arrested on Thursday for allegedly aiding in the 16 men who escaped from, Johannnesburg Medium A prison, in the facility commonly known as Sun City, on Monday last week.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the two correctional service employees would appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court today.

Dlamini said five of the escapees are back in police custody after being arrested this week, while two of the escapees were fatally shot in KZN last week Tuesday.

Nine men are still on the run.

Dlamini said police were still following up on leads in the ongoing manhunt.

The inmates escaped through a pipe shaft and used an object to break the wall of the prison, before getting past the fence.

Dlamini said a statement with more details would be released later.
