Six men arrested after Sunnyside shootout

Tshwane metro police seized one firearm containing 15 rounds of ammunition, a loaded magazine with nine rounds and housebreaking equipment.

Six men were arrested following a shootout with police in Sunnyside, in Pretoria, in the early hours of Sunday, Pretoria East Rekord reported.

Police were notified about a suspicious white Quantum minibus that was allegedly used in a business burglary at Sammy Marks Square, said Hercules police spokesperson Captain Bonginkosi Msimango.

“On the way to the scene, police found that ADT security officers were already chasing the suspects’ Quantum and they joined in the pursuit,” he said.

“The suspects shot at police, who retaliated. A few minutes later, the suspects were found near the corner of Troye and Berea streets in Sunnyside.”

Msimango said six suspects were arrested.

“One suspect sustained bullet wounds to the upper body. He was transported to hospital where he is under police guard,” he said.

Police seized one firearm containing 15 rounds of ammunition, a loaded magazine with nine rounds and housebreaking equipment, he said.

“A white Quantum without registration numbers was also recovered.”

Msimango said no police officers were injured during the incident.

“The suspects are facing charges of attempted murder, possession of unlawful firearm and ammunition, as well as housebreaking implements.”

They will appear in the Pretoria magistrate’s court soon.

“Investigations are ongoing which could lead to more arrests,” he said.
