Two Ekurhuleni serial rapist victims speak out

Dubbed the Ekurhuleni serial rapist, Phakathi pretended to be an electrician when he was on the prowl.

Two victims of convicted Ekurhuleni serial rapist Nkosinathi Phakathi have detailed horrific stories of how
Phakathi raped them when they were just 14.

Ekurhuleni serial rapist

Dubbed the Ekurhuleni serial rapist, Phakathi was found guilty on 148 charges, including 90 of rape last month.

He confessed to all the 148 charges brought by the state.

But his sentencing proceeding came to a halt on Thursday as the clinical psychologist’s report was not ready.

His lawyer, advocate Letau Kgokane, said they were still waiting for the report which would most likely be ready in March 2023.

“We managed to secure the assistance of a clinical psychologist and we have been assured the report will be ready on 1 March, 2023,” Kgokane said.

Phakathi pretended to be an electrician

One of the victims, who was in court on Thursday, said Phakathi had pretended to be an electrician who wanted to speak to the elders in the house.

“I was with my 12-year-old sister and one-year-old brother when he attacked me. He told us that he was an electrician who wanted to fix something in the house. I told him my parents were not in the house. After telling him my parents were not there, he forced entry.”

“He then threatened that if we did not do what he wanted, he would shoot us. I was the oldest among my siblings and I told my sister we should do whatever he wanted. I asked him not to do anything to my siblings and if he wanted to hurt anyone, let it be me. “

I said to him he can take whatever he wanted in the house but he instructed me and my sister to undress.

When he wanted to take advantage of my sister, I asked him to leave her alone and to just take me,” said the victim.

She said after the incident, she was very scared of men, even her own father. “I never wanted to be close to men because I didn’t trust them. My mother told me that this was my scar and no one would ever understand how I feel.

But the people who are close to me love me a lot and I should not think they will harm me,” she added.

She said when she saw Phakathi for the first time since the incident, she felt a bit scared. “But as I was sitting watching him in court, I saw that he has no power over me. I do not want him to see the light of day and I want him to get a harsh sentence because the death penalty is not al-lowed, otherwise we would have demanded the death sentence,” she said.

Another victim said Phakathi used the same modus operandi of pretending to be an electrician who wanted to fix something in the house.

She said she was alone getting ready for school when Phakathi raped her.

“He asked if the elders were there and I said no, he then pushed the door to force entry. After entering, he instructed me to take off my clothes and if I didn’t take off my clothes, he would stab me,” she said.

“I re-fused and he took my clothes off and forced himself on me.” The matter has been postponed until 27 March for sentencing proceedings.
