A 25-year-old Vereeniging man has made his first appearance in court for the alleged double murder of his mother and brother.
Brazea Daniel Mogudi appeared in the Vereeniging Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
He is facing two counts of murder for allegedly killing his mother, 54-year-old Dikeledi Mogudi and his 16-year-old brother, Ntathile Mogudi, at their home in Henley on Klip during an alleged violent confrontation on 4 May 2025.
Double murder
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), a neighbour heard a commotion coming from the Mogudi residence.
NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said that when the neighbour went outside to investigate, he saw Mogudi on top of his younger brother, who was lying on the ground.

“The accused’s mother was nearby, screaming for help and shouting, ‘He is killing him!’ The neighbour called out to the community for assistance. Although members of the community responded, they were unable to enter the property as the gate was locked.
“By the time help arrived, the accused had already fled the scene. The police, Community Policing Forum (CPF), and emergency services were called to the scene, however, both victims were declared dead on arrival,” Mahanjana said.
Arrest
It is further alleged that shortly after the murders, Mogudi handed himself over to the Meyerton Police Station, where he was subsequently arrested.
Mahanjana said the matter has been postponed to 12 May 2025 for Mogudi to consult with his attorney.
Eastern Cape murder
Last year, a 35-year-old man from the Eastern Cape, driven to kill his mother due to financial stress and her cancer diagnosis, was sentenced to life imprisonment for her brutal murder.
Maurice Butlion was handed a life term sentence by the Eastern Cape High Court in Gqeberha for the murder of his mother, Sharon Ann Butlion.
Butlion brutally stabbed his mother multiple times in their Park Drive Central flat following an argument.
He then set the dining room tablecloth alight before fleeing the scene in his mother’s car. The 65-year-old’s body was found the next day with burns and stab wounds.
