A cash-in-transit (CIT) heist on Saturday morning turned deadly after a group of armed suspects ambushed a security vehicle on the link road between Mandeni and the N2 in KwaZulu-Natal.
IPSS Medical Rescue and IPSS Security Services responded swiftly to reports of the robbery in progress but found one security officer critically wounded at the scene.
Targeted by gunmen
According to Samantha Meyrick, spokesperson for IPSS Medical, the suspects launched a violent attack on the security vehicle.
“The cash-in-transit vehicle had been targeted by a group of gunmen, which led to one security officer being shot,” she confirmed in a voice note shared with the media.
The robbers reportedly attempted to use explosives to access the cash but failed.
“It is believed the gunmen escaped empty-handed after the explosives failed to detonate,” said Meyrick.

Ekurhuleni CIT heist
In a separate incident, earlier this week, a similar CIT heist unfolded in Duduza, Ekurhuleni, where one person was killed and two others injured during an armed robbery involving explosives.
According to The Citizen’s sister publication, African Reporter, the Duduza incident took place on Monday when unknown suspects used explosives to bomb a G4S security vehicle.
Ekurhuleni District South African Police Service (Saps) spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza confirmed that the suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of cash, leaving behind significant damage.
“Police found that the suspects used explosives and fled the scene in multiple getaway vehicles,” Kweza said.
No arrests were made and police have urged anyone with information on either incident to come forward.
