Baffling case of the body and the stolen bakkie

The coffin was found to be carrying the corpse of a relative of one of the men driving the stolen Toyota bakkie, near Ngodwana.


The recovery of a stolen Toyota bakkie, near Ngodwana, in Mpumalanga, recently took an unexpected turn when a local security company discovered a body inside a coffin in the back.

AG Solutions’ Albert Gryvenstein said his team had received information regarding the stolen bakkie in the Ngodwana area on the evening of 5 May.

“The team gave chase and managed to pull the vehicle over,” said Gryvenstein.

He said local police were also at the scene.

“The two occupants in the bakkie were arrested and the team started doing a search of the vehicle. That is when they spotted a coffin in the back.”

Gryvenstein said it was initially thought there might be guns or other items hidden inside. However, when it was opened, the body of a man was found.

Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala confirmed the incident and said the white Toyota bakkie had been reported stolen in Vosman.

He said the body in the coffin was a family member of one of the suspects, and that he had had the correct documentation for the burial of the deceased.

Bail application

The two men accused of stealing the bakkie, appeared in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on 8 May, and the matter was postponed to 12 May.

Mpumalanga National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said the case was further postponed to this Friday 19 May for bail application.
