Unanswered questions follow Durban murder-suicide

Heartbreak and sorrow along with many unanswered questions filled the atmosphere at the home of 23-year-old Demisha Naik who was bludgeoned to death, allegedly at the hands of her boyfriend who then took his own life a few hours later, Chatsworth Rising Sun reports.
Several gender-based violence campaigns have fallen on deaf ears as more defenceless women in the community are subjected to abuse on a daily basis.
The young victim was described by her family as a bubbly, humble, and loving individual.
Speaking to the Rising Sun, the inconsolable mother of the victim, Shantha Naik, who is still reeling in shock following the untimely death of her only daughter, said: “We are mourning the loss of our angel, Demi. We will celebrate her life and memories. Her love and laughter has touched our lives and will be treasured in our hearts forever. Demi was a soft, caring child who would never hurt anyone and we will miss her every day. As a mother, I beg the public to stop speculating about the circumstances surrounding Demi’s death. We also thank our family and friends for all of their love and support.”

Women’s rights activist and attorney Shabnam Palesa Mohamed commented on the matter and said Demisha’s murder was another tragic gender-based violence death in the country at the hands of a partner with “uncontrollable anger issues”.
“If Demisha knew how to recognise the signs of abuse, that she deserved better in her life, and how to get out of a violent relationship, she would be alive today. Clearly, not enough human rights and empowerment education is happening in our homes, schools, universities, religious and community spaces,” she said.
Provincial police spokesperson Lt Col Thulani Zwane confirmed the incident and said a case of murder was opened at Chatsworth SAPS after the victim was killed in her flat.
Bystanders, emergency personnel and police were at the scene of the suicide.
“Police attended to a murder scene in Shallcross area, last week, at about 4.45pm. Upon arrival, they found a 23-year-old woman with stab wounds on her forehead. The motive for her killing is unknown at this stage and the matter is under investigation,” he said.
Lt Col Zwane said that on Wednesday at 11.45am, a 27-year-old male was found with a gunshot wound on a premises in Montford.
Shiraz Adam was declared dead by paramedics on arrival.
His father, Collin Munian, said: “It is a difficult time for us and we are mourning the loss of both youngsters. We have tried reaching out to Demisha’s parents and we will give them time to grieve. We are planning a meeting.”

Lt Col Zwane added: “A 9mm pistol was found next to him. An inquest docket was opened at Chatsworth police station for investigation.”
First responders at the scene, Sivan Subramodey and Lucalkis Padayachee of Amawele Emergency Services, attended to both scenes.
A ceremony for Demisha will be held at Umhlatuzana Temple on Friday, April 5. Supper will be served from 5,30, followed by service at 7pm.
