WATCH: JMPD ‘escorts’ taxi drivers firing live rounds into the air

The taxi association was apparently enacting a ritual to remember slain colleagues.

Cleveland SAPS station commander Col Mpe Lobisi Motaung confirmed on Wednesday that members of an unknown taxi association gathered at the corner of Cumberland and Allum streets in Edenvale earlier in the day and fired live ammunition into the ground and air, reports the Bedfordview Edenvale News.

“JMPD escorted them. We are not sure who authorised the escorting,” said Motaung.

The area was still cordoned off early on Wednesday afternoon. Motorists were advised to find alternative routes through the area.

“It is linked to Sunday’s incident. They were out today to ‘collect the spirits of the deceased’.

It is against the law to discharge a firearm into the air in a built-up area as it is possible someone could be killed when the bullet drops back to ground at speed.

Chief Supt Wayne Minnaar, the spokesperson for the JMPD, commented that he was not aware of the incident or the escorting of taxi drivers.

This is a developing story.
