DA Mogale City councillors undergo lie detector testing

The ANC in the municipality has accused the DA of using desperate measures to humiliate its own councillors.

Following a motion of no confidence last week that saw Mogale City Mayor Michael Holenstein toppled, the Democratic Alliance (DA) is now subjecting its councillors in the West Rand municipality to a lie detector test.

DA Gauteng leader John Moodey on Tuesday told News24 the party’s 27 councillors were undergoing voluntary testing to determine who had voted with the ANC to remove Holenstein, a DA councillor, from office last week Tuesday during a council sitting.

He said each councillor had paid to have themselves tested.

“Members of that caucus decided on their own that they would go through with the test. Every member was made very aware of the fact that they are not forced by any law to go through such testing,” Moodey told the news website.

In the 2016 local government elections, the DA secured 27 seats in the council‚ the Economic Freedom Fighters nine‚ the Inkhatha Freedom Party two and the Freedom Front Plus one.

During last week’s council setting, 38 councillors voted against the motion, which meant at least one opposition council member voted with the ANC.

The ANC in Mogale City has accused the DA of using desperate measures to humiliate its councillors, according to the report, saying the party was “anti-democracy”.

A new mayor is expected to be appointed to lead the municipality today.
