DA to review its relationship with KPMG following Gupta scandal

The party, which governs a province and more than 30 municipalities, has joined Gigaba's call to review what the auditors' role should be in SA going forward.

The Democratic Alliance (DA), which governs more than 30 municipalities throughout the country, said it would review all KPMG contracts following the company’s involvement with the so-called Sars rogue unit and the Gupta family.

The auditing firm has sacked nine senior executives and has been dumped by financial services group Sasfin and investment firm Hulisani due to reputational risk.

Business Leadership SA has also suspended KPMG’s membership.

In a statement released on Friday, the DA said it would review all KPMG contracts to ensure none of its work had been “compromised by unethical practices.”

“It has emerged that KPMG’s integrity has been compromised by numerous dodgy dealings with the Gupta family. The organisation and its senior management have seemingly been actively involved in the project of state capture and were implicated in the axing of then finance minister Pravin Gordhan, off the back of the so-called SARS rogue report.

“Now that National Treasury has announced that government departments and entities will review all KPMG contracts, it is imperative that they now take the lead and empower the structures below to do so.”

The party said all DA-led administrations prioritise clean and efficient governance that allows the party to deliver services to the people.

“Therefore all work done by KPMG must be reviewed thoroughly, so as to ensure the highest standards of good governance have been met.”

The DA governs more than 30 municipalities and the Western Cape province.
