Calling for free quality higher education, training for the poor and subsidies for the “missing middle”, the Democratic Alliance Student Organisation (Daso) yesterday asked students to join them in planned protest action at ANC regional and provincial offices.
Leader Yusuf Cassim said students from disadvantaged backgrounds with a family income of up to R200 000 per annum would receive the full cost of studying.
Parents earning between R200 000-R350 000 per annum would receive 66% towards the study cost and those with an income of R350 000-R500 000 per annum would get 33% in aid towards their studies.
Cassim vowed to take on Setas with massive budgets that were being mismanaged and not paying out students. They would also advocate fir an increase in internships and apprentices at TVET colleges.
While organising protest action, Daso would continue to oppose shutdowns at tertiary institutions “which has patently prejudiced poor students”.
Sharif said they would kick-start their free education campaign by hosting hall meetings in institutions of higher education and training around the country.
Daso also supported the DA’s call yesterday for emergency elections.
