Maine bought a R5,4 million property in an upmarket golf estate. The bond was R140 000 per month and the Guptas are said to have provided surety for Maine’s home. Maine used a Gupta lawyer to facilitate the deal which was originally submitted as a cash purchase through the Bank of India.

During an Eskom inquiry, Brown was implicated in having senior officials suspended from the power utility under the behest of the Gupta brothers. Officials testified that Brown received calls from a Gupta brother who made orders to her concerning the Eskom board.

“There is a clear association between Minister Brown and the Gupta family… Salim Essa would draw up his idea of board allocations and send it to the minister,” said Zola Tsotsi, former Eskom chairperson.

The two ministers have been implicated in having dealings with the Guptas and their appointment to Cabinet was approved by them according to explosive emails leaked in May.
