EFF members march ahead of ANC’s motion of no confidence against Mashaba

The ANC accused Mashaba of running the City into financial ruin and failing to deliver basic services.

EFF members, including councillors, were singing and marching around the City of Johannesburg council chambers on Thursday morning ahead of the vote on the ANC’s motion of no confidence against Mayor Herman Mashaba.

Meanwhile, DA members were marching outside the metro centre.

While the EFF that voted Mashaba into power in the City had not indicated which way they should vote, more than a dozen members were singing “akahambe [he must go]” ahead of the last council meeting of the year.

On Wednesday, Mashaba was upbeat and confident ahead of the vote, saying it was not up to the ANC to unseat him.

The council meeting began with several other items on the agenda, including the distribution of an urgent report on the recruitment of senior managers in the City.

ANC spokesperson Jolidee Matongo yesterday said one of the reasons the party wanted Mashaba out was his suspension and dismissal of key senior managers in the City. A number of councillors were not in attendance 20 minutes into the meeting.
