Ekurhuleni taxi industry to protest BRT system
Taxi services will not be available by tomorrow ahead of the staged protest against the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.
The Ekurhuleni Taxi Industry, under the leadership of both the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) and the National Taxi Alliance, intends to stage a protest march on Tuesday, March 20, Boksburg Advertiser reports.
According to BJ Mahlangu, Santaco regional secretary, the march will lead from the Germiston taxi rank to the offices of both the mayor and the speaker of council of Ekurhuleni metro in Germiston.

“The ETI will present a memorandum of demands in relation to the roll-out of the Harambee Bus Rapid Transit [BRT] system,” said Mahlangu.
He said as the ETI they we are 100% behind the Harambee BRT system, but they are now of the view the project continues to suffer a lot of delays.
“This has negatively affected the rollout of the project and thereby denying the citizens of Ekurhuleni a better public transport service that is designed to transform the public transport network and support the economy of South Africa.
“Our primary aim from this protest march, is that both the mayor and the city manager should be removed from their positions with immediate effect.
“On the day, public transport across Ekurhuleni will be adversely affected, and we call upon all Ekurhuleni Citizens to make alternative transport arrangements to their various destinations.”
