The man sustained severe burns to his face, chest and leg.

A 33-year-old jogger is being treated in hospital for severe burn wounds after a balaclava-clad cyclist threw what appeared to be acid at a jogger in Secunda on Wednesday morning.

“A man on a mountain bike rode up to me and then suddenly I was burning all over. He grabbed my watch and fled.”

Nienaber tried to wash off the acid with water from his water bottle.

He was in severe pain, but managed to make his way back to his home.

His landlord rushed him to Evander Hospital.

Nienaber sustained burns to his scalp and to the right side of his body, namely to his face, chest, arm and leg.

The Secunda Police is investigating a case of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm.
