Cops raid Berea drug den

The Provincial Drug Unit continues to put drug lords behind bars.

Officers from the Provincial Drug Unit acted on an intelligence-driven information regarding a suspect transporting drugs in the Durban CBD at the weekend, Berea Mail reports.

According to Colonel Thembeka Mbhele from provincial SAPS, officers spotted a silver Toyota Corolla in the vicinity of Cathedral Lane, Durban, and intercepted the vehicle.

The driver was searched and found in possession of a cigarette box.

“Inside the box were two clear packets containing 15 grams of cocaine. Further investigation led the team to the suspect’s home in Botanic Gardens Road where more drugs were recovered,” she said.

Mbhele said inside the house officers found a black bag containing numerous packets of mandrax and ecstasy tablets. An amount of R30 000 cash was also found inside the bag and is suspected to be the proceeds of drugs.

“A 44-year-old suspect was placed under arrest for dealing in drugs. The total estimated value of the recovered drugs is R485 000,” said Mbhele.

KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner Major-General Bheki Langa praised the team for the swift arrest and the recovery of drugs. “We will make sure that all those who are dealing in drugs are put behind bars.

“We will continue with our operations as part of the Safer Festive Season operations,” he said.
