KZN man dies after being hit by train

Despite the train applying brakes, it could not avoid hitting the victim.


A man from Ghandinagar, KwaZulu-Natal, was run over by a Metrorail train on Tuesday, April 10, at Preston in Park Rynie, Mid South Coast Rising Sun reports.

He sustained multiple fatal injuries and the body was removed to the Park Rynie State Mortuary.

“It is alleged that the train was on its way back to Durban from Kelso when the train driver saw the man standing near the railway tracks.

He hooted and waved at the man to get out of the way, but instead, the man moved on to the tracks and was struck by the train.

“Although the train driver applied his brakes, he could not avoid hitting the victim,” said police spokesperson Captain Vincent Pandarum.

The deceased was subsequently identified as Mahomed Shaik, 62, of Flamingo Road, Ghandinagar Township, in Umzinto.

An inquest docket was registered by the Scottburgh SAPS, and is being investigated by Warrant Officer Vis Moodley of the Scottburgh SAPS Detective Service.
