Minister reports progress in Senzo murder case

After almost four long years, the person or people responsible for the murder of former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa could be arrested and tried in a court of law “very soon”.

Police Minister Fikile Mbalula made this recent bold announcement to the media, explaining that the investigations were continuing and are at a “very sensitive” stage, Kathorus Mail reports.

Mbalula, the former sports minister, added: “I’m quite confident that one day we will bring closure.”

The minister’s statement has been received with jubilation by several residents around Kathorus.

“It looks like something that has been suppressing the investigation into the Senzo murder case has now been lifted. I deeply welcome what Police Minister Fikile Mbalula has announced. Now we have to wait and see,” said Jacob Moeketsi-Mathibe of Katlehong South.

Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana supporter Lindiwe Sithole of Mzamo Acres, who lives not far from Kelly Khumalo’s mother’s house, where Meyiwa was killed, said: “I hope this will finally remove the dark cloud that Senzo’s murder has left hanging over our suburb over the past three and a half years.”

Senzo died under mysterious circumstances on the evening of October 26, 2014, inside singer and TV actress Kelly Khumalo’s mother’s home in Mzamo Acres, a suburb of Vosloorus.

Stories emerging from six people who were inside the house when the alleged shooting took place detailed a rather bizarre incident in which they claimed that while they were having dinner they were attacked by three unknown gang members, one of whom was armed with a firearm.

One of the men apparently tried to attack Kelly, but Senzo, who was also the father of Kelly’s young daughter, sprang up to intervene and was shot in the upper body.

The trio was reported to have fled the scene, leaving the Khumalo family and their traumatised guests to find means to get Senzo to hospital.

After Senzo’s death the case was immediately handled by detectives from the Vosloorus SAPS. But several days later the case docket was transferred to the SAPS’ provincial offices, where all attempts to investigate the murder and bring the culprits to book seemed to grind to a halt.

Meanwhile, Senzo’s frustrated and desperate father, Samuel Meyiwa, who was trying every means possible to have the killers of his son brought to book, was ridiculed by members of the public. The police even threatened him with arrest, accusing him of interfering with their ongoing investigations.

In a desperate effort to draw attention to the continued lull in his son’s seemingly “stagnating” murder docket, Meyiwa Snr was reported to have ambushed the police minister during a community gathering in KwaZulu-Natal last November. Despite angry shouts from the crowd, he finally managed to get the minister to listen to his desperate plea for justice for his son.

From the police minister’s recent announcement, it seems the father’s plea did not fall on deaf ears.
