WATCH: Joburg Water undertaking largest repair job in entity’s history

Parts of Johannesburg have been without water since Tuesday morning.

The City of Joburg is undergoing a major infrastructure repair, and urges residents to be patient during the process, Sandton Chronicle reports.

Johannesburg North residents were left without water on Tuesday due to planned water interruptions caused by the maintenance at the reservoir site.

The restoration is set to take place between 1pm and 7pm on Wednesday provided there are no further complications.

Ward 109 councillor Werner Smit has visited the Johannesburg Depot in Kramerville to meet the depot manager and coordinator of the water tankers. “More tankers are being dispatched from Alberton,” said Smit.

“I’ve asked them to expedite a tanker on the eastern side of the M1 Marlboro Gardens and Kelvin at the Kelvin Village Shopping Centre in South Way, as well as one at the Wendywood Clinic in Wendy street Wendywood.”

The MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, Councillor Nico de Jager has released a statement on behalf of the City of Joburg.

In the statement, she advised residents of the Sandton, Bryanston, Woodmead, Morningside, Alexander, Linbro Park and the surrounding areas that there were major leaks identified on the main water pipeline that runs through Linbro Park landfill site.

“This is the largest repair job ever done by Joburg Water on a main line, and due to the burst being 35 metres deep on a very unstable landfill, we could not risk burying our employees alive during the maintenance process.” she said on the statement.

She further stated that an additional 16 water tankers would also be rolled out today in the affected areas.
