The ANC’s 55th elective conference is off to a bumpy start as security had to be called in to calm down delegates refusing to let party president Cyril Ramaphosa deliver his opening address.
Delegates from KwaZulu-Natal and others have been making it hard for Ramaphosa to be heard, as they continued singing and chanting while he was trying to speak.
The arrival of former president Jacob Zuma didn’t make things any easier for Ramaphosa.
Accreditation issues threatened to mar the first day of the conference, which started eight hours late.
As of 4pm, many members were still queueing for accreditation, causing tensions to run high.
It is understood the delays over accreditations was due to load shedding and system failures on Thursday.
Over 4 000 voting delegates are expected at Nasrec, Johannesburg.
