Nominations for ANC top 7 officials announced

The nominations for the ANC’s top seven officials have been announced at the governing party’s 55th national conference at the Johannesburg Expo Centre.

The nominations were concluded in the early hours of Sunday morning after congress adopted the credentials report earlier on Saturday evening.

ANC elective conference 2022

The party’s national officials are now expected to include a seventh additional member after the conference acceded to constitutional amendments to the ANC’s constitution to allow for the introduction of the position of second deputy secretary-general.

These are the candidates nominated at the conference who will be included on the ballot paper for election on Sunday morning.

ANC president:
1. Incumbent ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa

2. ANC national executive committee (NEC) member Zweli Mkhize 

ANC deputy president:

3. ANC treasurer-general and acting secretary-general Paul Mashatile

4. ANC NEC member and Justice Minister Ronald Lamola

5. Eastern Cape Premier and ANC provincial chair Oscar Mabuyane

ANC national chairperson:

6. Limpopo Premier and ANC provincial chair Stanley Mathabatha

7. ANC national chair and Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy Gwede Mantashe

8. ANC NEC member and Deputy Minister of Finance David Masondo

ANC secretary-general:

9. Former KwaZulu-Natal ANC secretary Mdumiseni Ntuli

10. Former Eastern Cape premier Phumulo Masualle

11. ANC head of elections and Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula

First ANC deputy secretary-general:

12. ANC NEC member and the party’s national head of organising Nomvula Mokonyane

The ANC’s general manager at Luthuli House Febe Potgieter-Gqubule sent an email to the party’s electoral committee declining her initial acceptance of the nomination for the deputy ANC secretary-general post.

ANC NEC member Gwen Ramokgopa was nominated on the conference floor for the first deputy ANC secretary-general position by a delegate from the Eastern Cape, but she declined the nomination.

13. ANC MP and NEC member Tina Joemat-Peterson was nominated on the conference floor by her home province, Northern Cape, for the first deputy ANC secretary-general position.

Joemat-Peterson accepted the nomination and will be Mokonyane’s challenger for the position after she met the 25% threshold to be included on the ballot paper.

Second ANC deputy secretary-general:

14. ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) national coordinator, Maropene Ramokgopa, was nominated on the conference floor for the second ANC deputy secretary-general position and accepted the nomination.

Ramokgopa met the 25% threshold to stand for the position.

15. ANC member Ronalda Nalumango was nominated on the floor by the Free State and accepted the nomination. She also met the threshold.

ANC treasurer-general:

16. ANC member and Ramaphosa’s special advisor Bejani Chauke

17. Outgoing ANC national spokesperson Pule Mabe

18. ANC Ekurhuleni regional chairperson Mzwandile Masina

19. Gwen Ramokgopa was nominated again on the floor for the position of treasurer-general and she accepted the nomination. Ramokgopa met the 25% threshold.

Former ANC councillor in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, Andile Lungisa, was nominated by a delegate from Limpopo on the floor, but did not qualify to stand because he is suspended from the ANC.

Lungisa was not present at the conference plenary when he was nominated.

ANC NEC member Lindiwe Sisulu was nominated on the conference floor for treasurer-general and accepted the nomination. Sisulu failed to meet the 25% threshold.

Others who declined nomination

ANC NEC member Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma was nominated on the conference floor for the position of ANC president by a delegate from Sedibeng in Gauteng, however, she declined the nomination.

ANC deputy president David Mabuza was also nominated for re-election. He also declined the nomination to stand for a second term.

Adoption of credentials report

Earlier on Saturday evening, the conference adopted the credentials report, bringing the total number of voting delegates to 4 436.

The head of the ANC’s electoral committee, former president Kgalema Motlanthe, said voting for the top seven officials will take place at 9am on Sunday.
