Parliamentary portfolio committee stalls shortlisting process for new SABC board members

The committee wants to conduct exit interviews with willing members who have since resigned to investigate the reasons for the resignations.

The quest to fill the eight new vacancies at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board will once again be delayed as parliament’s portfolio committee on communications has decided to conduct exit interviews with the board members who recently resigned.

Although the committee wants the remaining board (consisting of four non-executive members) to be dissolved, they also wish to investigate the reasons for the resignations due to the fact that they believe “too many boards have been dissolved.”

SABC News reports that the exit interviews have been set for next week Tuesday.

“Without politicking on the matter on the views that are raised here on the dissolution of the board, we’ve never found out the reasons why the board disintegrated into factions and then they got to be dissolved,” ANC MP Mzwamadoda Kalako told the publication.

The committee was supposed to shortlist 24 candidates from a list of 233 nominees, who were then going to be interviewed to fill the new vacancies.

There is no word on when the committee will resume the shortlisting process, but once they do, the 24 names will be published on parliament’s website for six days for public comment.
