Traditional healer denies giving ‘Van Damme’ singer muti to win

Maskandi muso Mroza surprisingly won the SABC's Song of the Year competition ahead of Babes Wodumo's Wololo and King Monada's Moreki.

Reports that Thulani Nkwanyana, a well-known sangoma from KwaZulu-Natal, is behind the popularity of Van Damme, a hit track sung by Mroza, have been circulating since the SABC announced it as Song of the Year for 2016.

According to Move magazine, Nkwanyana has denied this, saying he was very angry at Ukhozi FM’s programmes manager Zandile Tembe for starting the rumour. Tembe has since refused to comment on the issue.

“I am not an inyanga, I am a traditional healer. I don’t use muti to heal people. I have never said that I’m Mroza’s inyanga, so those who are saying that are talking rubbish,” he was quoted as saying.

“Zandile was vocal about the Mroza issue, I never said I made that song win. She is going to feel the wrath of my ancestors as I am not taking this lying down…” added Nkwanyana.

Mroza stunned the public when he went on to win the award over Babes Wodumo, King Monada and especially Dr Malinga whose song Akulaleki was touted to take the accolade.

Mroza has since been snubbed by the Metro FM Awards when they announced their nominees for Song of the Year last week. Speaking to TshisaLive, he said he wasn’t too bothered though and was focused on his music.
