Afrikaans singer Theuns Jordaan passes away at the age of 50

The South African music industry is reeling after news of the death of Afrikaans singer-song writer Theuns Jordaan broke on Wednesday.

Popular Afrikaans singer Theuns Jordaan has passed away.

The exact cause of Jordaan’s death is not yet known, but the singer-songwriter was diagnosed with leukaemia in September 2020.

Jordaan told Netwerk24 in December last year that his prognosis was very good and that he was already in remission.

According to the publication, Jordaan had a bone marrow transplant in March this year.

Jordaan was popular in Afrikaans music circles, loved by audiences all over South Africa for his famous songs including Soos Bloed, Jou Skaduwee and Vreemde Stad.

“One of his lesser-known songs, Jasmyn, Katryn, is one of my all-time favourite songs, although he never performed this song on stage.

“I recall asking him about the reason why he never performs this song live on one cold night in 2017 after one of his concerts (he still signed CD covers at the time). With a small smile, he just shook his head and said it’s too sad,” said The Citizen’s lifestyle editor, Xanet Scheepers.

Jordaan was one of the most successful South African artists, having sold more than one million records. He also received numerous awards during his career, including a South African Music Award in 2013 for the top-selling artist in the country, for his album Roeper.

Fans, friends and colleagues took to social media on Wednesday to share their condolences and their favourite Theuns Jordaan songs.

Controversial singer Steve Hofmeyr didn’t want to believe the sad news, taking to Twitter to say he will wait for confirmation.

Hofmeyr’s son, Armand Hofmeyr, who is also a musician, took to Facebook to share his condolences, expressing how much he had learned from Jordaan.

“Rest in peace. See you one day soon,” he said.
