Tributes pour in for murdered journalist Jeremy Gordin

Gordin’s family reportedly became concerned when the former Star and Sunday Independent editor wasn’t responding to messages.

Tributes poured in yesterday for retired journalist Jeremy Gordin who was murdered in his house in Parkview, Johannesburg, on Saturday night, in an apparent home robbery.

One South Africa leader Mmusi Maimane said: ‘This is a tragic story and we must nev-er get used to this. We must address crime in this country.”

House robbery and murder

Police are investigating a case of house robbery and murder. They are also still establishing what was taken from the house and points of entry.

Gordin’s family reportedly became concerned when the former Star and Sunday Independent editor wasn’t responding to messages.

The family had been on a visit in Cape Town, while Gordin remained in their Parkview home. Gordhin’s wife, who is en-route to Johannesburg, confirmed his death to News24, but was unable to provide further details.

The publication reports that a friend gained access to the family home – which had been locked from the outside – and found the house had been ran-sacked and his body had been covered.

The life and times of Gordin

Gordin was the director of the Justice Project at Wits University and the author of Zuma: A Biography. He also became a regular columnist for Politicsweb.

Born in Pretoria in 1952, Gordin studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel and Unisa. He went on to become a three time recipient of the Mondi Shanduka South African Journalist of the Year, in 2003, 2004 and 2007.

Among the tributes on social media was one from professor Anton Harber, executive director, Campaign for Free Expression. He wrote: ‘Jeremy Gordin RIP played a key role in getting the release of these two men [Fusi Mofokeng and Tshokolo Joseph Mofokeng] who spent many years wrongfully in prison and neglected by the ANC.

It was one of the many achievements of a man who lived life to the full. ‘He was passionate about journalism, books, writing and life, and had a prodigious ap-petite for them all. He was not shy with his views and opinions and enjoyed provoking us with them.”
