UPDATE: Police confirm five suspects have been killed in Durban shootout

Three other suspects were arrested, police said.


Police have confirmed five suspects were fatally wounded in a shootout after an attempted cash-in-transit robbery on Thursday in Springfield, Durban.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane confirmed three other suspects were arrested, Northglen News reported.

“The group of suspects robbed a business premises in the Springfield area and police reacted swiftly. When members approached the suspects, they were fired upon and returned fire. One suspect was shot and killed on Umgeni Road.

“Three suspects were arrested. The other five suspects fled in the scene in a getaway vehicle. Police gave chase and the suspects continued firing at members. As the suspects entered the Parlock area, four suspects were shot and killed. Several firearms were recovered at the scene,” Zwane said.

According to Zwane, one suspect is still at large.

The incident follows a shootout on the N2 last month with an alleged cash-in-transit gang where five suspects were killed. Police also found a SAPS radio in the suspects’ vehicle.
