Cycling event hailed as a resounding success

The mass participation cycle event was non-timed and cyclists could join from any on-ramp along the M4, as there was no fixed start or finish line.

HUNDREDS of cyclists took advantage of a four-hour closure of the M4 Ruth First Highway on Sunday which formed part of the Cycle Sunday initiative.

The event, put forward by Cycle Lab and Peschl Sports, owned by uMhlanga resident Shaun Peschl, also involved the eThekwini Transport Authority’s (ETA) GO!Durban and the Pedal Power Association (PPA).

“The idea for Cycle Sunday has always been in the back of my mind and that we could do this in a fun environment, rather than a race environment. We approached the special events department and the key points that triggered the City into allowing the event was that the freeway was only closed for four hours, there were limited access roads closed so motorists could still move in and around Durban, and the Moses Mabhida precinct was already part of the cycling circuit.

“Overall I would say the event was an overwhelming success. We had such positive feedback from everyone. Incredibly we picked up 120 entries on the day. This cycle event was not meant to be a race, but rather an activation and a celebration of cycling. The goal was to make cycling accessible, affordable, and enjoyable for everyone. It’s about getting families, friends, and communities on their bikes and experiencing Durban together in a completely new way. The hope now is to use the momentum to push for this on a monthly or bi-monthly basis,” Peschl explained.

The initiative was pioneered by Shaun Peschl (right) and was supported by various roleplayers, including the Pedal Power Association (PPA). Peschl and Liz Heydra, national safe cycling campaign manager of the PPA, said the event was a resounding success.

Members of the GO!Durban Academy, Romano Jacobs, André Brown, Fareed Marais, Fazel Ohlson and Brandan van Rooyen said they thoroughly enjoyed the event.
Cyclists from the GO!Durban Academy in Cornubia and KwaMashu, Mbadi Thabo Siphesihle and Konke Ngcobo, enjoyed the event.
Cycle Sunday was also ideal for families and the Kooverjey family, Meera, Diya, Ritesh, Aaraa-Ri and Shireen, with Rushil Narsey, said they would welcome more events like this.
The Newcombe-Bond family, Amy, Justin, Olivia and Jack made the trip down from the Highway area to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. Amy was representing Dirt School SA.
The MC for the event is Sifiso Mngoma.
