Cycling event hailed as a resounding success

HUNDREDS of cyclists took advantage of a four-hour closure of the M4 Ruth First Highway on Sunday which formed part of the Cycle Sunday initiative.
The event, put forward by Cycle Lab and Peschl Sports, owned by uMhlanga resident Shaun Peschl, also involved the eThekwini Transport Authority’s (ETA) GO!Durban and the Pedal Power Association (PPA).

“The idea for Cycle Sunday has always been in the back of my mind and that we could do this in a fun environment, rather than a race environment. We approached the special events department and the key points that triggered the City into allowing the event was that the freeway was only closed for four hours, there were limited access roads closed so motorists could still move in and around Durban, and the Moses Mabhida precinct was already part of the cycling circuit.
“Overall I would say the event was an overwhelming success. We had such positive feedback from everyone. Incredibly we picked up 120 entries on the day. This cycle event was not meant to be a race, but rather an activation and a celebration of cycling. The goal was to make cycling accessible, affordable, and enjoyable for everyone. It’s about getting families, friends, and communities on their bikes and experiencing Durban together in a completely new way. The hope now is to use the momentum to push for this on a monthly or bi-monthly basis,” Peschl explained.
