Durban North community knits for a cause
Residents knitted several items including beanies, jerseys and blankets at the annual knitathon event held at St Martin's Church.
THE community came together to support St Martin’s Church’s annual Knitathon event this past weekend.
In the week leading up to the event, as well as on the day, residents knitted and donated many items, including beanies, baby items, jerseys and blankets.
The event was part of the Bulwer Outreach programme, which sees members of the church and the Durban North community knit and crochet hundreds of items, including clothes, beanies and blankets, for the community of Bulwer in the foothills of the Drakensberg, specifically for winter.

Sharon Liebetrau, the co-ordinator for the event, said she was blown away by the support shown by the community.
“It’s just so beautiful seeing the community come together to do something for other people. We always have the support of community and this year was no different. We also had volunteers from the North Bay Lodge who dedicated their time to giving back.
“To be able to give the residents of Bulwer some warmth in this way is wonderful, as their winters are harsh. We also had quite a few donations of wool throughout the week as well as beanie donations,” she said. “The atmosphere was so special and everyone enjoyed the interacting as they knitted, crocheted or made pom poms.”
Official count
- 14 completed blankets
- 31 knitted jerseys of various sizes
- 160 beanies.
