North Durban service club mourns stalwart’s passing
Affectionately known as 'Uncle Phil', Philip Meyer was a long-time member of the Lions Club who gave his time to various outreach programmes.
THE North Durban Lions Club is mourning the loss of one of its club stalwarts.
Philip Meyer (84) died last week having dedicated his life to serving others for the past 60 years.
Having served as a Lions member in Gwelo (now Gweru), Zimbabwe in 1974, he later joined the Pietermaritzburg Lions Club in the 1980s before eventually joining the North Durban Lions Club in 2007.
Affectionately known as ‘Uncle Phil’, residents visiting the Eastman’s SuperSpar, Umhlanga Rocks SuperSpar and Kensington Square SuperSpar, would recognise Meyer because he would collect groceries for the Lions’ food collection and hamper projects.

President of the Club, Grant Hobbs, led the tributes to Meyer.
“Phil was so much more than just a member of the Lions. He was someone who was always there, always willing to help and always ready to give his time to the Club and the community. He was part of the heart and soul of North Durban Lions. His presence, his kindness, his humour and the way he gave so much of himself will be deeply missed. It is difficult to put into words what he meant to the Club because Phil was simply one of those people who became part of the fabric of the Lions family. There is now an empty space that can never truly be filled,” he said.
Fellow club member Kim van Wyk echoed those sentiments.
“Phil was an embodiment of what it meant to serve others, giving countless hours and enduring discomfort and pain to continue collecting food for the needy recipients whose plight had touched him 20 years before and who he never stopped caring deeply about,” he said.
