‘Mindfulness’ refers to the choice to focus all your attention to the present, and avoid the common temptation of rehashing the past or spending too much time worrying or planning for the future.
Although reflections of the past and future are important determinants of good mental health, clearing one’s mind to really appreciate and grow from some of the single moments that make up our days, is essential. Take the time to really focus and dedicate your energy completely to the simple tasks that make up your day. Put away your laptop and cellphone and listen to your children read.
Turn off the TV and talk to your partner about something other than what the school teacher said or the mortgage. As you are reading this, become aware of your body. Start to notice how the air moves in and out of your lungs, bringing new energy and restored life to your body.
Imagine that this air is your favourite colour. Start to imagine that as you breathe in, this colour is entering your body and spreading like dye in water – bringing life to all the corners of your appreciated body. Stay with this moment, being mindful of how simple and complicated your body is.
Feel what it is like to be alive in this complex and miraculous system. You have slowed down your life, and become mindful of the present.
