Hello, everybody! Happy New Year! Welcome to 2020 and the start of a brand new decade. May you have a blessed new year and all your dreams come true. I wanted to say “may you have a peaceful year”, but it doesn’t look as if this will happen. Australia is burning down from all those wildfires. A lot of people lost their homes and vast tracks of bushland has been destroyed, with many plant and animal species perishing in the blazes.
Global warming is a reality that we, as mankind, cannot afford to ignore. If that is not bad enough, World War III might be on the horizon between the USA and the Middle East.
Thank goodness I’m staying in South Africa, located at the bottom of the southern hemisphere, far away from the conflict. How was your festive season?
Mine was quite busy, thank you for asking. Firstly, I went to the Midlands Mall in Pietermaritzburg to do some last-minute Christmas shopping. I took my wheelchair and for the first time ever, I went shopping on my own. I even bought myself a coffee and a doughnut at Krispy Kreme.

The mall was quite crowded, so a lot of people were in my way. Next time, I’m taking a cattle prod; that should do the trick. For Christmas, I went to my uncle’s farm in the Free State.
I had a blast! My wheelchair went with me. I explored the whole farm on my own or with my little cousins in tow. I even almost drove over a meerkat. The little thing dashed over the road, right in front of me. I had fun driving on the farm roads, driving past the crop fields and cattle pastures. No wonder there are quite a few of my friends whose chosen career is farming. The best part of the festive season for me is the Boxing Day Test that always starts on December 26.
I’m very happy we gave England a jolly good thrashing this year. If I was a Protea (SA cricket player), I would keep saying “32-12” to rub our World Cup final victory in their faces. I still get goose bumps when I think about that day.
How was your New Year’s Eve? I hope you made it memorable. I joined some friends of mine at ATKV-Drakensville. It was a lekker evening. Don’t worry, I behaved myself.
What are your resolutions for the year? I’m just making one resolution: that I make no resolutions. Every day is a gift and I must strive to make it extraordinary and be the best person I can be.
We will speak again next week.
