According to information received, the J.B. Marks Local Municipality suffered a loss of R2.8 million.

The Potchefstroom Flying Squad and the K9 unit apprehended a 43-year-old man during a crime intelligence driven tactical operation.

The man was apprehended in Extension seven, Ikageng on Tuesday evening, 23 April 2024.

After receiving information last month about petrol card fraud that was used in relation to decommissioned vehicles of the J.B. Marks Local Municipality, the police gathered information and arrested the 43-year-old suspect.

One of the petrol cards was used at a petrol filling station in Potchefstroom, after which the police investigated the matter and arrested the suspect soon after.

The suspect was found to be in possession of a suspected cloned Nissan NP 200 vehicle at the time of his arrest. The police seized both the vehicle and the petrol card.

Information was received that as a result of this ongoing fraud, the municipality suffered a loss of 2.8 million rand.

The suspect will appear in the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 26 April 2024 on charges of fraud and possession of suspected stolen property.

Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Sello Kwena applauded the police for their arrest and stated that the police will continue to work hard so that justice can be served.
