The difference we make matters

A Letter from Estian Carstens.

As an economics student, balancing studies with daily life often left me stressed, and I was searching for a positive outlet.

I decided to do something meaningful, which led me to PAWS, the local animal shelter. There, behind a cage fence, I met a dog with the kindest eyes and an open heart. I named her Ester, inspired by the Bible verse “for such a time as this.” She needed me, and I needed her, both of us finding each other exactly when we were meant to.

From the start of our eight-month journey, Ester was gentle, kind, and brimming with a love she was just waiting to share. In her, I saw a spirit that mirrored the best of us: a soul longing to give and connect, just as we humans do when we feel we have so much to offer.

Animals have always held a special place in my heart, and I believe we must be their voice. Just like the saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child,” it also takes a community to help those in need. Animals rely on us to step up, and over the next eight months, I was there for Ester. She blossomed in ways that only love and trust can bring out.

Today, Ester is proudly known as ‘Chief Office Dog’ at PAWS. She greets every visitor at the door, gathers as many treats as she can, and naps by the entrance, bringing warmth and joy to everyone she meets. Her story has become a part of mine, and I’m grateful for every moment.

My name is Estian Carstens, and I hope that Ester’s story blesses you in a way that you, too, can apply in your life. Whether it’s through giving time, love, or a simple act of kindness, know that the difference we make matters—for animals like Ester, our communities, and ourselves. Ester is up for adoption at PAWS.
