High School for Girls Potchefstroom turns 120
Girls High is known for its strong traditions and heritage, which are important pillars of its structure.
The High School for Girls Potchefstroom, known as Girls High, was founded in 1905 when the Central School (established in 1874) was divided into separate high schools for boys and girls. Initially part of the Central School, the school officially opened its doors on January 24, 1905, with 52 learners.
Girls High is known for its strong traditions and heritage, which are important pillars of its structure. The school emphasises academic excellence and strives to create an environment where learners can thrive.
With 120 years of history, Girls High boasts a strong group of alumnae, known as “Old Girls”. The most important aspect of the activities of the Old Girls’ Association must be fellowship and friendship, which begins at school and is carried on throughout a lifetime.
“What an incredible honour it was to celebrate 120 years of Girls High pride! Our traditions make us who we are, and one of our favourites is the beautiful birthday cards designed by each grade every year. This year, our girls truly outdid themselves with their creativity and spirit to mark this special milestone. Of course, no birthday is complete without cake! We celebrated in true Girls High style by cutting and enjoying a delicious custom-made cake, making this milestone even sweeter. Here’s to another 120 years of tradition, excellence, and glitter-filled celebrations,” the school said in a statement.
