The 32-year-old suspect accused of murdering and dumping the body of 17-year-old Lesley Makousa appeared in court on Monday and opted to abandon his bail.

James Shomolekae has been identified as a suspect in the murder of 17-year-old Lesley Makousa. According to NW SAPS spokesperson, Col Sabata Mokgwabone, the suspect previously appeared in court for housebreaking but will also be charged for Lesley’s murder. Mokgwabone says the suspect is still in custody and will next appear in the Potchefstroom magistrates’ court on 16 September.
A passerby found the body of Lesley, the Gr. 10 learner of Promosa Secondary and a member of LGBTI (lesbian women, gay men, bisexual, transgender, and intersex) community dumped in desolate bushes in Promosa on 6 August. He had been robbed of his cell phone and strangled to death, presumably with a shoelace that was found near the body. In another case involving the alleged rape of a 22-year-old woman in Ventersdorp, the 38-year-old suspect, Francis Pretorius, appeared in the Ventersdorp magistrates’ court on the same day. His case has been postponed to 16 September.
Mogapi wa Tsotetsi, the chairperson of Action For Social Justice International says the affected, as well as the LGBTI sector, call for the continued support of the community, different organisations and media houses in ensuring that justice prevails in these cases.
