The herculean problem of sewage leaks and spills in Ikageng and the surrounding areas has still not been resolved. Now the sewage spillage has even infiltrated homes and schools.
Nombiso Mpeqeke of Tshedimosetso Street in Kanana says they have been battling with a sewage spill in their home for more than two months. ‘We can’t sleep at night because of the smell. We need someone to assist us,’ she said.
Seiphemelo Secondary School has been drenched in sewage since mid-September.

After a week of sewage spilling outside the classrooms, the municipality fixed the problem. About a month after it had unblocked the drains, however, the sewage started spilling again, even worse than before.
Rivers of sewage were flowing between classrooms and through the school grounds, making it impossible for the learners to enter their classrooms without having to step through sewage.
In Stander Avenue in Potchefstroom, sewage has also been flowing from a utility hole on a resident’s sidewalk. He says the stench is unbearable and the sewage has already killed some of the plants in his garden. The Herald is still waiting for a reply from the J.B. Marks municipality.
